Der Maler Carl Schuch

Wilhelm Leibl (1844 - 1900)

Born on October 23, 1844 in Cologne and died on December 4, 1900 in Würzburg. - After initial training with Hermann Becker in Cologne, Leibel took up studies at the Munich Academy with Hermann Anschütz, Alexander Strähuber, Arthur Georg von Ramberg and, lastly in 1868 with Carl Theodor von Piloty. In 1869 together with Theodor Alt, Rudolf Hirth du Frenes and Johann Sperl he moved into a mutual studio. After making the acquaintance of Gustave Courbet in the same year, Leibl travelled to Paris where he also met Édouard Manet. Upon his return he retired from his art activities in Munich and lived in seclusion in the Bavarian countryside. In 1892 he was named professor for art. Early on, a group of artist-friends grouped around Leibl, who was the leading representative of the naturalistic style in Germany - a group that has become known as the "Leibl-Circle".
